Story Outline
Stern but proud, Rafe Crompton keeps his long-suffering wife and their four children under his thumb. Hilda, their youngest, particularly resents her father's Victorian attitude and her simple refusal to eat a herring develops into a highly explosive situation. The family is almost broken up before Rafe is made to see the dangers of his attitudes.

Potted History
Bill Naughton was born in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, West Ireland in 1910 and moved to Bolton in 1914. In 1957 Bill Naughton wrote a play about the Crompton Family which was broadcast on radio under the title 'My Flesh My Blood'. The 1969 film 'Spring And Port Wine' was shot in Bolton, Lancashire. It starred James Mason, Diana Coupland, Susan George, Hannah Gordon, Rodney Bewes and Len Jones as the Crompton Family.
