| This 'Play for Voices' was commissioned by the BBC in the mid 1950's but it has subsequently proved highly successful as a stage production receiving its premiere in 1956 and achieving an international pedigree, having been performed all over the world. Through night time to dawn, then morning, daytime, afternoon, dusk, evening and back to night time, the inhabitants and ghosts of a tiny Welsh village tell of themselves and each other in delightful prose-poetry and song. The characters are deep and rich and universal. An ensemble piece that will bring to the stage some sixty characters including Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard and her two dead husbands, local bard Reverend Eli Jenkins, Dai Bread and his two wives, local lady of the night Polly Garter and the narrator, Captain Cat and his ghostly girlfriend Rosie Probert. This immortal classic about a day in the life of a Welsh village remains by turn moving, funny, beautiful and completely timeless - a kaleidoscope of all human life. Filmed in 1971 with a stellar cast including Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O'Toole. |
